Celebrating one's heritage especially as an immigrant is something that comes with great pride and also great difficulty. For many, it is deeply tied to grief.

It is the grief of the loss of extended family, country, language, customs, religion, certain foods, music, and the climate that formed our childhoods in order to blend in and minimize the expected discrimination and xenophobia. And while there is clearly still a lot of work to be done, it is crucial that we take the time as a country to acknowledge the many differences that we have so that perhaps we can better learn to appreciate them. By recognizing that we are not all the same, click allow everyone to be unique and to be comfortable with who we are, where we come from, and where we are headed.

I was lucky and am very grateful to the many people who are citizens and used their right to vote to reform the immigration system so that practices like the age-out law which separated many families like my own despite being documented legallycould be put to an end. People who took the time to listen and be part of the solution stepped in when my immigration status affected my identity, my ability to stay with my family, go to college, accept financial aid, accept employment, get paid for my work, whether or not I would ultimately be granted citizenship and exercise my right to vote, which was a process that took 30 years.

Change and progress are driven by the stories we tell.

Inclusion and equity happen effectively when we learn to listen with the intention of understanding especially when it comes to people whose experiences are limited based on their identity. I was born in Lima and when my family immigrated to Miami, we settled down in a largely Latinx community so I grew up speaking Spanish everywhere I went and only interacting with other Latinx people. Because of this, I feel strongly connected to my heritage and I practice my culture every day to ensure it lives on no matter where I am. How did you end up at the National Wildlife Federation?

It shows that even if you come from nothing, you can do anything as long as you take a stand on something. They live the values that I follow and being around them, along with the tremendous community down there, is always something I look forward to.

Everyone from my relatives and my parents to my older sister have served as role models click here me. They made incredible sacrifices in choosing to immigrate to the U. It was a great experience. Being a part of the UH community helped us expand and embrace the diversity of our own culture. During my time at UH, I lived on campus and was introduced to so much diversity-students that came from many different places. At that time, there was a group on campus that promoted Hispanic traditions, including hosting small concerts with Spanish music.

Mexican and I speak Spanish. What is one cultural tradition or celebration that is important to you? Most recently Dia De Los Muertos. I had the chance to celebrate in Mexico City!

In one word, how would you describe your cultural identity or heritage? What is one of your favorite sayings in Spanish? It's a proud moment to embrace our beautiful culture and reflect how far our families and ancestors have come.
