Advertisement Last fall, Amazon announced a nationwide hiring spree of warehouse workers, promising decent wages and health benefits. The company fills many of its warehouse positions through temp and staffing agencies. Benefits of Employer-Paid Holidays Increasingly, competitively paid holidays and other time-off benefits are becoming crucial to an employer's ability to attract the best employees who have skills that are critical for the operation of the business.

Paid holidays may be negotiated by employees who have an employment contract. Senior-level employees with a contract are likely to have come from positions in other organizations where their seniority gave them the maximum paid holidays and vacation time. Senior-level employees are unlikely to settle for less time off when accepting a new position. In fact, if an employer doesn't offer equivalent paid vacation and holiday time, it may be a deal-breaker for the prospect—even if they don't typically use all of the time available.

However, some workers expect to face extra hurdles when voting this year. In some states and counties, a consolidation of polling locations and a shortage of poll workers have led to confusion and long waits in some locations. At the same time, high interest in the election is already leading to record turnout in some states with early voting, exacerbating logistical problems heading into Election Day on November 3.

The family grew concerned that Sharlene's daughter would bring the virus home to her five-year-old daughter, so Sharlene decided to have her granddaughter quarantine with her in her home. Since they're in quarantine, it meant that the family was apart for her granddaughter's fifth birthday.

One of the workers said he has been in quarantine for more than a week, since he "woke up one morning hacking up a lung. A worker from a separate facility in Kentucky said he had no issues getting paid while he was in quarantine for two weeks.

Once he exhausted his two weeks of paid sick leave, he said he still didn't feel safe returning to work, so he took advantage of Amazon's unlimited unpaid leave and applied for unemployment. As a result, the worker said he is making more money than he would from his job at Amazon. Amazon has previously said no workers reported to Smalls since he was an hourly employee. Smalls said he was fired for organizing the strike, but Amazon said it fired Smalls because he violated social distancing rules after being told to go under quarantine for coming into contact with Chandler.
