Several of the favorite words of teenagers involved a jota or a 'g' before an 'e' but forum rules prevent me from spelling them out. During those summers I heard a lot of jotas and they were clearly to my ear harsher than the 'h' of English although not nearly so harsh as the jotas that I heard in Madrid.
