When you open Facebook it takes you to the main page which displays your news feed. Facebook uses an algorithm to build this page for you and display what you see here. This includes public photos and posts that you upload yourself as well as any comments that you leave on someone else's public post. The scary part is that, if you have the feature enabled, anyone on the social media platform can follow you unless you've blocked them. I think it's just a garbage rumor. It takes a little navigating that is not very intuitive but follow these step and you'll find it is not hard.
