This would have uploaded their contact information to Facebook.

Just follow these steps: 1. Open your favorite web browser and visit the Facebook Messenger contacts page.

Scroll down if necessary, and click on the Delete All button. Log out of Facebook on all your devices and sign back in again. Anyone from your address book that was uploaded to Facebook at an earlier date has now been disassociated with your friend data. We also sometimes communicate with them through the Messenger for general query or voice complaints. In the Messenger update, Facebook has informed advertisers that they can now create News Feed ads that open a conversation in Messenger.

So if you ever clicked on one of those ads, in future you can be contacted by that brand in Messenger directly.

Here is an example of the Twitter app with all notifications turned off. Notice the alert style is also set to none. You can still get alerts and banner pop-ups if none is not selected here. Some apps may have some additional settings to turn off push notifications. If you are still getting alerts, badges or sounds for a particular app after turning everything off as we have described, check the setting for the app.

To turn off the Facebook Messenger Notifications within the desktop view of Facebook: Step 1 — Login to Facebook I have to put this step because some people skip it Step 2 — Click Messenger in the left navigation Step 3 — Next, click the Gear icon that is the settings for Messenger. Step 6 — Click Done. Once you have unchecked that box, you will essentially turn off Facebook chat instant notifications and will no longer see those annoying pop-ups.
