Electricity is very expensive on the Big Island, but we have found ways to conserve on electricity by using energy efficient lighting and not using AC. Local, fresh, healthy Food The cost of food and in many cases access to fresh foods was becoming challenging in California. The Big Island is the best place in the world for fresh fish, grass fed beef, and tropical fruits and veggies. Fishing boats daily unload their catch of the finest Pacific ocean fish in Hilo harbor to air freight around the world. The Hamakua coast north of Hilo grows vegetables that are available in the local supermarkets and at Farmer's markets around the area. The Puna area grows all sorts of tropical fruits which are also widely available. Access to affordable food that is fresh and healthy is a great reason to live in Hilo, Hawaii. Mililani is a nicely planned city that has a great residential atmosphere to it. Plenty of people live in this area — there are many new and old homes to choose from if you choose to live here.

Housing costs are cheaper than town and there are some good schools in Mililani if you have children. Mililani has a military base and there is a large is hilo hi a good place to live of military living around the base.

Mililani and Wahiawa can be cooler because they are up in the mountain a bit. There are breezy sections and also areas where the wind is blocked by the many trees.

If you like you can get a home up on the hill — and have a view of Pearl Harbor, or even to Diamond Head Volcano. Aloha Sports Stadium is here, as is Pearlridge Mall — a giant shopping center with all sorts of businesses.

If you need it — you can find it at Pearlridge. One I remember in particular is a short one — the Aiea Loop. Oh, and the Aiea Ridge Trail too. I remember finding wild strawberry guava to eat, as well as mountain apples rose apples. The rest of the island does not see or breathe as much vog.

Everything on the windward side, even wooden furniture, grows mold unless it is cleaned regularly. Did I forget to mention that we also get hurricanes and tropical storms?
