The remnants of Hurricane Ida pummeled the East Coast on Wednesday night with record-breaking rain and flash flooding, killing at least 45 people. Eleven of them, including a toddler and an year-old woman, reportedly drowned in New York City basement apartments in the worst flash flooding event the city has ever experienced.

In Westchester County, New York, officials confirmed the deaths of at least three people there, including two men whose vehicles were submerged in water. It's the fourth time in just two years that the New York City region has felt the impacts of tropical storms — far above average, according to Wunsch.

Most recently, remnants of Tropical Storm Elsa flooded the city's subways earlier this summer.

There was a mandatory evacuation of low-lying neighborhoods. That afternoon, the wind caused a construction crane on a Midtown skyscraper to come loose.

Supermarkets were crammed with people stocking up on supplies. In addition to the storm, Coch found records of other hurricanes hitting the Northeast as far back as While northeastern hurricanes are less powerful than southern storms, they tend to be larger in area, and faster moving. When the storm made landfall on Long Island, it was moving 50 miles an hour; a typical southern hurricane travels about 15 miles per hour.

The storm surged all the way across New England and into Canada.

But the more he learned, the more Coch believed the city was vulnerable. New York City is built atop bedrock, so rain that falls on the city stays on the surface, creating flash floods long before the heart of the storm arrives. When the storm does come, it brings a new surge of water, this time from the sea.

Add a massive storm surge to this slurry, and things get wet in a hurry. The powerful winds would uproot thousands of trees, down power lines and send debris flying in all corners of the city.

And those winds could shatter windows on skyscrapers, especially in the taller buildings that would bear the brunt of powerful gusts that occur at higher elevations. The canyons of Manhattan could magnify the winds, and would be a deadly place for anyone caught beneath the raining glass.
